Transport for Epsom
Most people would agree that there's too much traffic on the roads, and it's
getting worse. The congestion, delays, casualties and emissions of pollutants
and carbon dioxide are bad for our environment, health and stress levels.
- Surrey's traffic flows are more than twice the national average.
- Surrey's economy lost £570 million in 1999 through traffic delays. £28
million was lost in Epsom and Ewell alone.
- 6,843 people were injured on Surrey's roads in 2000, some fatally. This is
the highest per-capita rate in the country.
- Only 49% of school journeys in Surrey are made on foot, by bicycle or by
public transport, compared with 70% nationally.
- Coronary heart disease is the biggest killer of adults in this country.
Part of the blame is that we drive too much when we could walk or cycle.
- In the UK up to 24,000 vulnerable people are estimated to die prematurely
each year, and similar numbers are admitted to hospital, because of exposure
to air pollution, much of which is due to road traffic.
Clearly we can't go on as we are. Doing nothing is not an option. We all have
to do our bit - starting from now. It doesn't mean banning cars, just reducing
them. We're not anti-car, more anti-traffic. There's no single solution but a
whole host of things we can do. This site provides some ideas. If you have ideas
